Looking for real information about hypnosis on the internet can make your head spin. There are so many hucksters and con-artists on the internet, it's hard to figure out just who to trust. When you want to learn how to hypnotize people, it helps to have an expert lead the way.

My name is Michael Stevenson. Six years ago, I was a computer programmer and a heavy smoker and had never heard anything about hypnosis except the silly tales created by Hollywood and horror story writers. In my journey to learn to hypnotize people, I learned five things that everyone needs to know before they embark on their quest to learn hypnosis:

1. Hypnosis is real, but it's not what most people think it is

This is the secret that most hypnotists don't want you to know. Hypnosis doesn't require any magic, hocus pocus or special powers. Most people don't know it, but hypnosis is actually a natural state that everyone has experienced – even you! See, most hypnotists are like magicians – they closely guard their methods behind a curtain of secrecy. I'm here to tear down that curtain and tell you that these methods are only secret because they don't want you to know how easy it is. The average person can learn to hypnotize themselves and others in a matter of minutes or hours. Once you know what to say, you'll be able to hypnotize almost anyone. No hocus-pocus required.

2. Hypnosis is powerful, but not in the ways you might think

The second misconception is spread by amateur hypnotists selling their books and trainings. They will tell you anything to get you to buy their books for anywhere from $60 to $300, making some of the wildest claims. Those are the modern-day "snake oil" salesman. Many of them are not even real hypnotherapists, and they cannot be trusted. Most of these con-artists will promise to teach you things like "covert hypnosis" and "persuasion techniques" that simply don't work. Think about it... if these methods were real, they would be widely-known and people would be making billions of dollars using them everywhere. Use a bit of common sense when dealing with these types of people and avoid getting ripped off.

3. Despite all that, hypnosis can be used to do some amazing things

Millions of people have quit smoking, lost weight, eliminated diseases and improved their lives in countless other ways using hypnosis. Hypnosis taps the power of your subconscious mind, the part of you that runs your body, your memory and your habits. It has been used by everyone from Sigmund Freud to Tony Robbins. The famous Mayo Brothers did more than 17,000 deep-abdominal surgeries using hypnosis as the only anesthetic. If hypnosis can do all that, just imagine what it can do for you.

4. Hypnosis requires no degree and no training. In most places, it isn't even licensed or regulated

This is both good and bad. On the one hand, this means that almost anybody can learn and practice hypnosis. There is no reason to attend long, intensive, training seminars or to attend college to learn hypnosis. It's a natural phenomenon and cannot be regulated. On the other hand, this means that anybody can write a book on hypnosis, spreading false information and lies, just to make a buck. So be careful who you trust, and make sure that whoever you decide to learn from has the knowledge and experience necessary to teach you.

5. There are good, credible resources available for learning hypnosis. Knowing how to find them is the key

Like any industry with its share of con-artists, those of us with credentials and experience suffer. But there are many good-natured hypnotists and hypnotherapists who teach hypnosis through books, audio or live trainings. Do a little research. Find out what training and experience a hypnotist has. If they don't list a valid address and phone number, and if they don't invite you to contact them directly, think twice before spending your hard earned money.
